01/The verdict

A $9 one-time (normally $29) Rust-built window switcher for macOS, bought by Mac power users who want a lighter, more private Cmd-Tab replacement.

alt-tabr is a polished take on a solved problem. It needs only the macOS Accessibility permission and Apple notarization, so there are no approvals, data or lock-in to get past. Its pitch is that it uses less memory and doesn't need Screen Recording. Those claims are real, but any capable builder can copy them, and the market leader AltTab is free (with a $9.99 Pro tier), open source under GPL-3.0, eight years old and at about 16.3k GitHub stars. I found no press, Hacker News or Reddit threads, no founder audience and no reviews off its own site, so a clone or a free alternative can easily take its customers.

02/Moats

No moats found. Nothing here would take a good clone longer than a week.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The notch, carousel and Liquid Glass switcher styles are front-end work that copies in days
  • The low resource use comes from a native AppKit binary with no polling. Any Swift or Rust developer can do the same and run the same top and powermetrics benchmarks
  • Accessibility-only permissions and no telemetry are design choices, not barriers
  • Half-screen snapping and a JSONC config file are standard features in Rectangle and similar free tools

How you'd go after it

  • Ship a free open-source version of the same lightweight Rust switcher and let GitHub and Homebrew handle distribution, where AltTab already sits
  • Add the features alt-tabr lacks, like live thumbnails and type-to-search, at the same $9 one-time price
  • Bundle window switching into a wider window manager (snapping, Spaces, layouts) so one purchase replaces several utilities
  • Win SEO comparison pages ('best Mac window switcher'), which rivals like Manico, Switchi and Better Window Switcher already publish

04/Build against it?

Stay away

A free, well-loved open-source leader owns this niche, at least five paid rivals compete for a one-time $9 to $15 sale, and a clone would have nothing to protect it.
