Does Stan have a moat?

Yes.

55/100 · Real moat

“The storefront copies in a month. 85k creators earning 20% to recruit more creators, plus Steven Bartlett as co-owner, do not.”

01/The verdict

A link-in-bio storefront where creators sell digital products, courses, coaching and memberships. Creators pay $29 or $99 a month, and Stan takes no cut of their sales.

There is nothing hard about Stan's product: a storefront, checkout, course host, booking tool, email and Instagram AutoDM that a capable builder could match in about a month. What protects it is how it finds customers. Stan has about 85k active creators, and each one can earn 20% recurring commission for referring others. Every store link sitting in a creator's bio advertises Stan. John Hu builds in public to roughly 200k TikTok followers, and Steven Bartlett and Gary Vaynerchuk have money in it. Lock-in is weak, though. Churn was reported at 13% a month in 2024 and growth has slowed, so the score rests almost entirely on Stan's ability to keep signing up new creators.

02/4 moats

~30 mo to cross

It pays a 20% recurring referral commission that make-money-online creators push hard, and every storefront at stan.store/username is a public ad in someone's bio. The domain gets roughly 6 to 9M visits a month and has a domain rating of 89, mostly from direct and social traffic. It reached about $40M ARR on a single $5M seed.

To cross it: Get tens of thousands of creators to put your link in their bio and pitch your tool to their own followers, which takes years of compounding and not just a higher commission (SchoolMaker offers 40% and has not dented Stan).

Time won't do it

CEO John Hu (@jayhoovy) built Stan in public on TikTok (about 200k followers, plus about 109k on Instagram, and he is a LinkedIn Influencer). Steven Bartlett of Diary of a CEO became co-owner in May 2025 in a deal described as worth tens of millions, and Gary Vaynerchuk is an investor.

To cross it: Sign up a famous creator-economy figure as a partner or owner and have a founder who will build in public for years. You can't buy that with time or code.

Funding

Shallow

~12 mo to cross

Verified MRR is about $3.57M across 101,590 active subscriptions. It reported a 40% EBITDA margin in 2024 with about 30 staff, so it can pay for content, support and promotions out of profit.

To cross it: Raise a seed or Series A large enough to subsidise a free tier or bigger referral payouts for a year or two.

~3 mo to cross

Creators keep their email lists, courses, bookings and recurring memberships on Stan, and checkout runs through Stan's own payment setup. A creator can't plug in their own Stripe account, so moving paying members means re-collecting payment details. Even so, churn was about 13% a month in 2024.

To cross it: Build white-glove migration that imports products and email lists and moves members over, and offer to cover the first months.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • A link-in-bio storefront with checkout, digital downloads and coaching bookings
  • A course builder, memberships and simple email broadcasts
  • Instagram comment-to-DM automation (Linktree, Kajabi and ManyChat already have it or something similar)
  • Flat pricing with 0% transaction fee, which any rival can match on day one

How you'd go after it

  • Take the creators who leave each month (about 13% in 2024) with a free tier or pay-per-sale pricing, which suits the many creators who make little and resent $29 a month
  • Go vertical: fitness coaches, realtors or therapists, with niche templates, compliance and their community, which Stan's one-size store doesn't serve
  • Go after non-US and non-English markets with local payment methods and payouts faster than Stan's 3 to 9 days
  • Build discovery Stan doesn't have, the way Whop's 22M-buyer marketplace sends creators buyers instead of relying only on their own audience

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only go in with a distribution edge Stan can't follow you into: an audience you own in one vertical or a non-US market, or a marketplace that brings buyers. Linktree (70M users), Beacons (7M creators) and Whop ($1.6B valuation) already crowd the generic version.
