Does Notion have a moat?

Yes.

80/100 · Real moat

“A Notion clone is a few months of work. Getting 100M users, 30,000+ templates and years of company wikis to move is the hard part.”

01/The verdict

An all-in-one workspace for docs, wikis, databases, projects and AI agents. Teams and companies pay per seat, from individuals up to enterprises.

The block editor and databases have been copied many times by AFFiNE, AppFlowy, Anytype and Coda, and Notion still grew to about 100M users and an estimated $500M to $600M ARR in 2025. Its protection comes from a huge user-run template and creator economy, teams that already have years of company knowledge stored in it, and a funded, compliant enterprise business. All of these build on each other. A challenger can match the product. Matching the habits, the content and the distribution is another matter.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

Most of Notion's growth came from users promoting it, not from a sales team. The Notion Marketplace lists 30,000+ templates from about 22,000 creators. On top of that there are YouTube tutorial channels, a global ambassador program and consultants, and about 80% of users are outside the US.

To cross it: Build a creator economy that people make money from, big enough that YouTubers and template sellers switch platforms. Money alone can't buy that.

Time won't do it

Companies keep their wikis, project databases, linked relations, automations and now Custom Agents inside Notion workspaces. Many have built this up over years. Exports lose relations, formulas and permissions, so a migration means rebuilding the system, not just moving files.

To cross it: Ship a high-fidelity importer that keeps databases and relations, and pay for the migration, aiming at new teams rather than settled ones.

Time won't do it

Workspaces are shared across whole companies, and public pages, guest access and shared templates spread it further. Once a few teams use it, the rest of the company tends to follow. Over 4M paying customers is reported.

To cross it: Get into companies through a single team or use case and grow from there, which takes years at Notion's scale.

Time won't do it

Notion has raised about $343M to $418M, including a $275M Series C in 2021 from Coatue and Sequoia. It had an $11B tender valuation in Dec 2025, and revenue roughly doubled in 2025. That pays for AI compute, Mail, Calendar and an enterprise sales team. It also holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and HIPAA BAAs.

To cross it: Raise hundreds of millions and spend a year or more on enterprise certifications and sales. Few challengers will manage this.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The block editor, databases and page structure, which open-source clones like AFFiNE and AppFlowy already match
  • AI writing, Q&A and search across connected apps, which every workspace tool and ChatGPT or Claude connectors now offer
  • Templates as a format, since anyone can rebuild them
  • Basic Slack, Google Drive and GitHub integrations

How you'd go after it

  • Local-first or self-hosted for privacy-sensitive teams and EU buyers (the Anytype and AppFlowy approach)
  • Speed and offline reliability for heavy users who complain about slow, large workspaces
  • A vertical workspace with domain workflows built in, for example for legal, clinical or engineering teams, where Notion stays generic
  • Start AI-native and built around agents, so the workspace is just a byproduct of agents doing the work, and price per outcome rather than per seat

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only go in with a sharp wedge Notion's horizontal model can't serve, such as local-first, a regulated vertical or truly agent-first work. Head-on clones have stalled for years.
